Get rid of ethidium bromide and your UV transilluminator. The Pearl Blue Light Transilluminator gives you clear bands with blue dyes like SYBR safe and Gel Green. It is not designed to work with Ethidium Bromide, though some customers do use it with EtBr.

It's designed to fit underneath most gel boxes so you can visualize your DNA as it runs.

How it Works

1. There are 2 pieces. A blue light source and an orange plastic filter. Your gel gets sandwiched between the blue light source on bottom, and the orange blue filter on top
2. The blue light illuminates the gel, causing your SYBR safe, Gel Green, or other blue light dye to fluoresce. But it's difficult to see that fluorescence because the blue light behind it is so bright
3. The orange filter blocks out most of the blue light coming from the LED illuminator. What's left is the fluorescence from your DNA bands

The design of the Open Gel Box and the Pearl Blue Transilluminator are a culmination of mind storming sessions, trial-and-errors, discussions with Kay Aull, Jonathan Cline, Mac Cowell, John Cumbers, Jim Hardy, Tito Jankowski, Michael Katsevman, Tom Knight, Meredith Patterson, Norman Wang, and many others who actively participated on the DIYBio Google Groups forum and gave their thoughts through the Open Gel Box 2.0 RFC.
